BLUE Communications Office Space by Jean Guy Chabauty and Anne Sophie Goneau

BLUE Communications Office Space by Jean Guy Chabauty and Anne Sophie Goneau in interior design Category

Jean Guy Chabauty of Moderno and Anne Sophie Goneau teamed up to create a new office space for BLUE Communications, an interactive agency based in Montreal. Located in an old brewery, the office space was a little under 3,000 square feet and needed to be updated to reflect the firm’s creative nature, specializing in web development, branding, content creation, social media, and apps. Chabauty and Goneau created an ultra-white, modern space with pops of blue that reinforce the firm’s branding. Could you be creative in this clean, white space?

When you walk in, you’re immediately greeted by neon letters of the agency’s logo and as you move foward, a white shark floats on the wall – a symbol of independence and confidence, as well as creativity.

There is also a glass-enclosed conference room – a fishbowl, so to speak. It’s private enough to hold important conversations, yet still keeps you visually connected to the rest of the space.

Bichos Oak Branch Lamps by Martinho Pita

Bichos Oak Branch Lamps by Martinho Pita in home furnishings Category

The Bichos lamp series comes from Portuguese architect Martinho Pita, who creates the handmade lamps from pruned Portuguese Holly Oak trees. “Bichos,” which roughly translates to “creatures,” is meant to reflect just that – some type of wild creature that’s frozen while in motion.

Each lamp in the series is completely unique given that every branch in nature is as well. The light source comes from a textile-covered cord that is threaded up through each branch like a lifeline, much like a vein delivering blood.

Over time, Pita has become the expert on tree pruning in order to get the branches just right. Here, he describes his process:

“Once on the ground I calibrate the branch in the right position and peel it while is fresh and soft. It’s then a matter of shaping, sanding and detailing it before it dries completely since holly wood is extremely hard. It is important to understand its dynamics.”

Skim Milk: Rolu by Chiaki Murata

Skim Milk: Rolu by Chiaki Murata in style fashion home furnishings Category

Rolu is a minimal design created by Osaka-based designer Chiaki Murata of hers for Metaphys. Murata has created some of Japan’s most iconic designs, and, along with his profession as an industrial designer, is a professor at the University of Arts and Design in Kyoto as well. He is a strong advocate of social responsibility and sustainability, and is constantly pushing the envelope for his designs to adhere to these ethics.

Skim Milk: Rolu by Chiaki Murata in style fashion home furnishings Category

Rolu functions as an on-the-go memo holder with a single brass bar holding down the paper. There are perforated edges along the length of the paper in increments of 10cm each, perfect for taking down directions, to-do lists, or grocery lists. The design is influenced by Metaphys’ popular Corda pen, and uses the same material and production process. The design comes in white, black, and orange.

I’m the type of person who still likes to use pen and paper for taking notes and checking off to-do lists. Rolu is an efficient and elegant solution to scribble down ideas and musings. Functionality aside, the design is beautifully minimal, yet uniquely sophisticated and mysterious. At first glance, it takes a second to figure out how Rolu functions, and then it all makes perfect sense.

Nendo Tableware Reuses Coca-Cola Bottles

Nendo Tableware Reuses Coca Cola Bottles in home furnishings art Category

Nendo partnered with Coca-Cola in a new collection of tableware made from recycled bottles. Bottleware makes use of the iconic 1916 “contour bottle”, the ones that are continually collected, rinsed, and reused over and over again. Once these particular bottles couldn’t be used again for their original purpose, Nendo got to work and created this set that was recently exhibited at DESIGNTIDE TOKYO 2012.

Nendo was enamored with the green tint that the bottles are known for, called “Georgia Green,” and the tiny air bubbles that show up in glass that’s been recycled. With a desire to showcase these traits, the designs were kept simple but with an intentional resemblance of the original bottle.

Egypt-Inspired Jewelry by Jamie Spinello

Egypt Inspired Jewelry by Jamie Spinello in style fashion Category

Metal jewelry designer Jamie Spinello’s recent creations are inspired by a time that has always intrigued me – ancient Egypt. This is a new fashion trend – you heard it here first. OK, maybe you didn’t but I’m putting it out there!

Egypt Inspired Jewelry by Jamie Spinello in style fashion Category

Working with copper, aluminum and brass, Jamie crafts pieces inspired by all kinds of different cultures, peoples and times in history but what interests me most is the Egyptian jewelry, partially because I love the geometries but also because I like the oversized nature of the pieces and their forcefulness.
