Daphna Laurens’ Clever Dutch Designs

Hey Daphna Isaacs and Laurens Manders, the 1980s called…and they told me they WISHED this was the kind of furniture that came out of that decade. Mixing traditional Dutch sensibilities with retro elements, the Daphna Laurens team is creating some pretty clever modern furniture and accessories.

Fanciful shapes mix with pure function to meld stunning style into modern furniture that at once seems familiar yet completely new. A recent collection of theirs, “Table Pieces” (Tafelstukken), combines oak and porcelain for amazing results.

Nonspace by Emily Grundon

Nonspace by Emily Grundon

This art project by Emily Grundon would probably be perfect for our Skim Milk column but I couldn’t wait. Called Nonspace, the projects aims to highlight the architectural geometry of space through a study of light and shadow. Looking to the corners, Emily puts the focus on the lines and angles of the art gallery itself – as opposed to that displayed within it. She hopes to draw more interest to the details that often go unnoticed, and as she says, “hopefully creating a quiet but intriguing view of the simplicity and value of architecture.”

Tomorrowland by BEN SANDLER

There is a home where the inner mess of its inhabitants contrasts with the immaculateness of the dwelling, a paradox of atemporal permanence, where every clue is a lie. Together and apart, a couple appears in the contradiction of their distant closeness. Solely the strange presence of a young woman, seemingly indifferent to the ambient heaviness, invigorates the house of her lightness. As we progress in this journey, these mysteries becomes more transparent, yet opaque: its undoubtedly a car flying away into the forest under the reverberating light. Does it carry the wife away? Will she finally manage to resolve her indecision? An invitation to the dreams and reflections in the labyrinth of an ambiguous world.

Ridiculously Easy DIY Detail: Painted Legs!

You ready for it? You ready for the simplest, kind of silly, incredibly adorable detail to add to your home to make your place different than anyone else’s? To make it stand out in the quirkiest of ways? Really ready? Okay: Paint your furniture legs! Eep! If you’re graphically talented, go for a geometric pattern. Or perhaps use a stencil to create a design.

Or heck, even just some neon spray paint would be terribly interesting. Kind of related to the trend of dipping your furniture legs that we all went wild for last year, there’s something a little more intentional and purposeful about this DIY detail. Spotted on Morning by Foley.

What do you think about painting your furniture legs with a pattern? A cool idea and something you want to try? Or too silly for you?
